Government Appointments Under Fire: Integrity at Stake?

Independent Member of Parliament Jone Usamate has criticized several decisions and appointments made by the government, suggesting they could have been handled more effectively. In an interview on The Lens@177, Usamate expressed his dissatisfaction with some government actions.

He emphasized the importance of institutional integrity and good governance, stating that it is crucial to place the right individuals in key positions. Usamate pointed out that unsuccessful candidates have been given various roles, which he believes may not serve the nation’s best interests. He warned that placing the wrong people in important positions can lead to poor decision-making and processes.

When asked to identify specific individuals who have been inappropriately appointed, Usamate preferred to reveal those names in Parliament.

He also commented on the government’s initial proposal to dismantle the Fiji Roads Authority in favor of transitioning all responsibilities to the Public Works Department. However, he noted that the government seems to have softened its stance since taking office, recognizing the value of the FRA and reintroducing discussions on the Public Works Department.

Usamate reiterated that having the right structures and personnel is essential for achieving positive outcomes, in contrast to the negative effects of incorrect appointments.

Furthermore, he addressed the issue of the lack of an invitation for the Opposition to attend the traditional welcoming ceremony for the visit of the Indian President. Usamate highlighted this as a breach of protocol, again attributing it to having unsuitable personnel in key roles.
