The government has announced a $540 million funding for the health sector. This includes $90 million to support the functioning of Ba and Lautoka hospitals through a Public-Private Partnership scheme (PPP). Further, Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad revealed that the government is working alongside the Australian Government, which has donated approximately $15 million towards infrastructure planning for the CWM Hospital.
Additionally, discussions are ongoing with potential backers including the Asian Development Bank and the World Bank for future financing options. The budget has allocated $4 million for private medical establishments like the Pacific Specialist Health Care and Sri Sathya Sanjeevani Children’s Hospital. Nineteen million dollars have been set aside to broaden general practice services, with additional expected costs reaching $5 million.
To support kidney dialysis patients, $3 million has been directed to continue the per-session subsidy of $180, rising from the previous amount of $150 million. A sum of $96 million has been earmarked for buying drugs and medical equipment, out of which $15 million is specified for the acquisition of bio-medical apparatus.
The government has also approved $12 million for interior renovations at Labasa Hospital and included an additional $3.8 million for minor refurbishments and maintenance jobs across all health facilities. Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu expressed his appreciation for the allocation and is eagerly anticipating its constructive utilization.
The minister acknowledged the collective efforts of other ministries as paramount, especially in improving infrastructure and workforce capacity. He also hinted at the challenging situation at CWM Hospital and emphasized the intention to seek support from developmental partners. He closed his remarks with anticipation for the forthcoming financial year and expressed confidence in enhancing various health facilities across Fiji.
