Goundar Shipping Limited (GSL) celebrated a significant achievement with the official launch of two new vessels, the M.V Lady Daya and the Motor Tanker Captain Lai. The event also introduced the company’s new fast ferry service, Goundar Fast Ferry PTE Ltd.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, the event’s chief guest, highlighted the importance of these developments for both Goundar Shipping and Fiji as a nation, emphasizing the advancement of maritime capabilities and the enhancement of connections between the islands, which contribute to economic growth.
Rabuka noted that the M.V Lady Daya and the Tanker Captain Lai pay tribute to the parents of the Goundar family, signifying Goundar Shipping’s commitment to the people of Fiji. He acknowledged the Goundar family’s historical role in the maritime industry, expressing gratitude for their provision of essential services linking the islands and supporting local communities.
The Prime Minister pointed out that the legacy of Captain Ilaitia Goundar, known as Captain Lai, continues to influence the maritime sector, and the Tanker ship bears his name. With a fleet that serves around 90 percent of Fiji’s population, Goundar Shipping boasts the largest fleet and crew in the country.
The M.V Lady Daya is set to enhance transportation efficiency among the islands and facilitate the movement of goods and services, thereby boosting the economy. The Captain Lai, recognized as Fiji’s first locally owned, operated, and registered tanker, will focus on transporting fuel oil and hazardous cargo, creating new job prospects for local seafarers in both local and international markets.
Prime Minister Rabuka praised George Goundar and his family for continuing the legacy of Narayan Sami Goundar with dedication. He appreciated their contributions to the maritime industry and their commitment to training future seafarers, particularly women, promoting inclusivity and gender equality in the sector.
The Prime Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting this vital industry, ensuring effortless transportation of people and goods across the islands. He reaffirmed the intention to collaborate with stakeholders, including Goundar Shipping, to maintain strong, safe, and sustainable maritime infrastructure for generations to come.
Since its establishment in 2010, GSL has significantly expanded its fleet, adding several vessels, including the Lomaiviti Princess II in 2012, MV Lomaiviti Princess III in 2015, and multiple vessels in 2018. The fleet continued to grow with additional ships from Japan and South Korea, including the MV Joseph P. Lomaiviti Princess XI and XII in 2021.
