Goundar Shipping Makes Waves with New Vessels and Fast Ferry Launch

Goundar Shipping Limited (GSL) marked a significant achievement with the official launch of its two new vessels, the M.V. Lady Daya and the Motor Tanker Captain Lai. The event also introduced the company’s new fast ferry service, Goundar Fast Ferry PTE Ltd.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, the chief guest, emphasized that these developments are pivotal not only for Goundar Shipping but for Fiji as a whole, as they enhance maritime capabilities and strengthen connections between the islands, fostering economic growth.

“The M.V. Lady Daya and Tanker Captain Lai, named in honor of the Goundar family parents, symbolize Goundar Shipping’s commitment to the people of Fiji,” remarked the Prime Minister. He noted that for decades, the Goundar family has been a key player in the maritime industry, providing essential services that connect the islands and support communities.

Rabuka praised the legacy of the late Captain Ilaitia Goundar, also known as Captain Lai, whose vision was instrumental in the company’s growth. Goundar Shipping now serves approximately 90 percent of Fiji’s population and boasts the largest fleet and crew in the country.

The M.V. Lady Daya is set to enhance transport efficiency between the islands while bolstering the economy by facilitating the movement of goods and services. The Captain Lai vessel, recognized as Fiji’s first locally owned, operated, and registered tanker, will focus on transporting fuel oil and hazardous cargo, creating new opportunities for local seafarers.

The Prime Minister acknowledged George Goundar and his family for their dedication to advancing the legacy of Narayan Sami Goundar. He highlighted their invaluable contributions to the maritime industry and their commitment to training the next generation of seafarers, including women, reflecting a broader commitment to gender equality and inclusivity.

Rabuka assured that the Government is dedicated to supporting the maritime sector, ensuring smooth movement of people and goods across the islands. He confirmed a commitment to collaborating with stakeholders, including Goundar Shipping, to maintain strong, safe, and sustainable maritime infrastructure for the future.

Since its registration in 2010, GSL has significantly expanded its fleet, incorporating vessels such as the Lomaiviti Princess II in 2012 and the MV Lomaiviti Princess III in 2015, along with additional vessels from Japan and South Korea, culminating in the MV Joseph P. Lomaiviti Princess XI and XII in 2021.
