The Gospel High School Under-15 rugby team has relied on self-belief as they make their mark in the Vodafone Deans Trophy tournament. GHS Principal Iliesa Parker shared insights on the team’s journey during an interview with SUNsports.
Last Saturday, the team pulled off a significant upset by defeating the favored Ratu Kadavulevu School with a score of 12-7 in the quarterfinals. Parker emphasized that the coaching staff has been focusing on addressing specific areas for improvement as they gear up for the semi-finals. He expressed concern about several players dealing with minor injuries, but hopes they will recover in time for Saturday’s match.
Parker commended the outstanding performance of his players against RKS, noting that this is the first time GHS has reached the Deans semi-finals in any category, marking a historic achievement for the school. He highlighted the strong support from parents, alumni, and the school management, which has played a crucial role in the team’s success.
The principal praised the coaching team’s effectiveness and reminded players about the importance of discipline both in school and on the field. He mentioned that the players are excited about their first opportunity to compete in a stadium setting this Saturday.
The team is set to face the reigning champions, Marist, whom they have not encountered this season. Parker expressed the team’s honor in facing such a prestigious opponent.
He encouraged all GHS rugby fans to wear the school colors of pink, white, and blue in support of the team during the semi-finals, inviting them to attend in large numbers. Parker also wished good luck to all other participating schools in the semi-finals.
