The Gospel High School Under-15 rugby team has found motivation in self-belief as they compete in the Vodafone Deans Trophy. This insight was shared by GHS principal Iliesa Parker in an interview with SUNsports.
GHS achieved a significant upset by defeating the favored Ratu Kadavulevu School 12-7 in the quarterfinals held last Saturday. Parker mentioned that coaches are focusing on improving certain aspects of the team’s performance as they prepare for the semi-finals. One of his concerns is the number of players dealing with minor injuries, and he hopes they will be fit for the match on Saturday.
Parker praised his team’s performance against RKS, noting the historic significance of GHS advancing to the Deans semi-finals for the first time in any grade. He highlighted the strong support from parents, alumni, and school management.
The principal expressed gratitude for the capable coaching staff leading the team and emphasized the importance of discipline among players both in school and on the field. As they gear up for the match, Parker mentioned the excitement of playing at the stadium for the first time and the challenge of facing a strong team like Marist, who they have not encountered this season.
“We are truly honored to play against a champion team like Marist, the defending champions,” Parker said. He also called on all GHS rugby supporters to wear the school’s colors of pink, white, and blue for the upcoming game, encouraging fans to come out in large numbers to support the team. Additionally, he extended well wishes to other schools participating in the semi-finals.
