The Under-15 rugby team from Gospel High School (GHS) has been propelled by self-belief during their Vodafone Deans Trophy journey. This sentiment was expressed by GHS principal Iliesa Parker in an interview with SUNsports.
GHS achieved a remarkable upset in the competition by defeating the favored Ratu Kadavulevu School 12-7 in the quarterfinal match last Saturday. Parker mentioned that the coaching staff has been focusing on several areas for improvement in preparation for the semi-finals.
He noted concerns regarding a few players who are dealing with minor injuries, hoping they will recover in time for the match on Saturday. Parker celebrated the team’s performance against RKS, highlighting that this marks GHS’s first appearance in the Deans semi-finals across any grade, making history for the school.
The strong support from parents, alumni, and school management has been crucial for the team. Parker praised the coaching staff for their efforts and emphasized the importance of discipline both in school and during training. He shared the players’ excitement about competing in the stadium for the first time.
Looking ahead, Parker acknowledged the challenge of facing Marist, a champion team and the defending champions, whom they have not faced this season. He expressed pride in the opportunity to compete against such a prestigious opponent.
Parker called upon all GHS rugby supporters to wear the school’s colors of pink, white, and blue on Saturday and encouraged fans to come out in large numbers to support the team. He also extended his best wishes to all other schools competing in the semi-finals.
