The US Embassy in Suva, in collaboration with Basketball Fiji, is hosting a sports diplomacy tour featuring two star athletes from the renowned Harlem Globetrotters. Will “Bull” Bullard and Cherelle “Torch” George will hold a special public event at Yat Sen School on Friday, August 16, from 5-7 p.m.
This family-friendly event is free and open to the public. The Harlem Globetrotters, an American exhibition basketball team, have delighted audiences worldwide with their distinctive mix of athleticism, comedy, and theatrical performances. Established in 1926, the team has become a symbol of basketball excellence, known for their innovative ball-handling skills, trick shots, and engaging audience interactions.
Over the years, the Globetrotters have performed in over 26,000 exhibition games across 124 countries and territories, often acting as goodwill ambassadors. Bullard, famous for his gravity-defying dunks and engaging personality, along with George, a Guinness World Record holder, will continue their journey to Nauru following their brief tour in Fiji.
This initiative is part of the U.S. Department of State’s Sports Diplomacy program, which aims to utilize the universal appeal of sports to foster connections between people, cultures, and nations. During their visit to Fiji and Nauru, they will engage with schools and meet basketball enthusiasts throughout both countries.
At the Yat Sen event, attendees will witness Bull and Torch showcase their basketball skills, engage in interactive games, and enjoy the Globetrotters’ signature blend of talent and humor. This is a rare chance to connect with two remarkable athletes who embody the power of sports to inspire and bring people together.
