On March 10, 2025, people across the globe will celebrate Commonwealth Day under the theme ‘Together We Thrive.’ This day brings together 2.7 billion individuals from 56 Commonwealth member countries, emphasizing shared values and aspirations for a collective future. The celebrations will include a diverse array of activities such as festivals, fairs, and faith-based services, highlighting the unity present among Commonwealth nations.
Distinctive events are scheduled worldwide; a vibrant street parade will be held in Saint John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, showcasing local culture, while special observances will take place in Wellington, New Zealand, and a flag-raising ceremony is set for Lisburn and Castlereagh in Northern Ireland. Educational initiatives will also play a significant role; for instance, schoolchildren in Nigeria’s Cross River state will partake in special readings, and young people in Pakistan will gather for a Commonwealth Day-themed Iftar.
In a message for the day, King Charles III, who serves as the head of the Commonwealth, highlighted the significance of friendship and support among member nations during these uncertain times. He noted that the Commonwealth’s diverse collection of nations exemplifies the spirit of camaraderie. His attendance, along with other prominent leaders, at a multicultural Commonwealth Day Service at Westminster Abbey will feature musical performances and readings in honor of the day’s theme, with artists such as Joan Armatrading participating.
Patricia Scotland, the Commonwealth Secretary-General, who will conclude her term in March 2025, echoed the message of unity in her final address, focusing on the resilience found in shared history, language, and commitments toward peace, justice, and sustainable development.
Commonwealth Day, which has been celebrated annually on the second Monday of March since 1977, continues to adapt and grow, with festivities now extending throughout an entire week. This year will also mark the announcement of the winners of the 2025 Commonwealth Youth Awards and the Commonwealth Peace Prize, recognizing significant contributions to peace and development.
Additionally, this year recognizes the landmark 60th anniversary of the Commonwealth Secretariat, a key institution in fostering collaboration among member nations, particularly in critical areas like climate action and youth development.
As Commonwealth nations celebrate their shared heritage and common objectives, this day serves as a hopeful reminder of the potential for unity and collaborative efforts to overcome global challenges.
