The Global Development Conference (GDC) 2024, organized by the Global Development Network (GDN) in collaboration with the Fijian government, recently took place at the University of the South Pacific in Suva, Fiji. The conference attracted more than 700 participants from nearly 100 different nationalities, including 200 individuals attending in person and an additional 500 joining online.

The event served as a crucial platform for climate experts, researchers, policymakers, civil society representatives, and students, who engaged in significant discussions centered around advancing climate resilience tailored to the local context. The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Prof. Biman Prasad, emphasized the pivotal role of evidence-based research in shaping effective climate policies during his remarks at the conference. He advocated for integrating research with strategy to better address the uncertainties posed by climate change and to strengthen the resilience of Pacific nations.

Continuing discussions highlighted the dire consequences of climate change facing the Pacific Islands, where rising sea levels and extreme weather events threaten environmental stability and cultural identities. Participants unanimously recognized the necessity for collaborative approaches and innovative resilience strategies to combat these pressing challenges.

The conference underscored the importance of effective communication within the GDN community to counter rising skepticism towards scientific findings. This aligns with previously held discussions in Fiji that focused on local capacities for climate adaptation and the development of practical methodologies.

It is notable that the insights shared at the GDC 2024 reflect ongoing initiatives, such as workshops aiming to build resilient communities by integrating adaptation strategies into local planning. The active participation of over 200 experts and policymakers at GDC reaffirms a collective commitment to addressing climate change challenges through research and partnership.

As communities and nations confront the realities of climate change together, there remains hope for future collaborative efforts that will enhance resilience, sustainability, and adaptability within the Pacific region. By championing local research and innovation, the GDC provides a solid foundation for progressive action towards a more climate-resilient world.
