Germany Celebrates Milestones in Fiji: A New Era Begins

The German Embassy in Suva celebrated its first anniversary in Fiji last night, marking one year since its establishment.

German Ambassador to Fiji, Dr. Andreas Prothmann, highlighted the shared interests between Fiji and Germany and emphasized that the bilateral relationship is just beginning to flourish.

The celebration drew hundreds of guests, including government officials, diplomats, and members of the public, who gathered to commemorate German Unity Day. This occasion also served as a tribute to Germany’s reunification after years of division.

Ambassador Prothmann reflected on the significance of German reunification, which took place on October 3, 1990, following a peaceful revolution in East Germany that led to the fall of the Berlin Wall. He expressed gratitude for living in a united Germany for over a generation.

The establishment of the German Embassy in Suva last year has strengthened diplomatic ties between Germany and Fiji, fostering cooperation in key areas such as climate action, trade, and development.

Ambassador Prothmann stated, “We are pleased to be part of the diplomatic community in the Pacific. As a proud member of Team Europe alongside our French, Spanish, and UK colleagues, we collaborate closely with the Pacific Island Forum and other regional organizations. Germany maintains strong relations with Fiji and the Pacific, sharing values and interests that align with both Germany and Europe. We advocate for a rules-based international order, as demonstrated by our support for UN resolutions opposing Russia’s aggression in Ukraine.”

This year’s German Unity Day celebration in Suva marked its second edition, focusing on showcasing Germany’s 16 diverse federal states. The theme aimed to highlight the unique histories, cultures, and traditions that each region offers, providing Fijians with a glimpse into Germany’s rich cultural fabric.
