George Speight has prioritized family following his release from prison after 24 years. Convicted for treason as the leader of the 2000 coup, Mr. Speight was serving a life sentence until he received a presidential pardon last Thursday.
Since his release, he has remained out of the media spotlight as he awaited the arrival of his older brother, Sam Speight, from Hamilton, New Zealand, who arrived on Friday.
Describing the heartfelt reunion, niece Jacqueline (Jackie) Speight stated, “Reunited after 24 long years, the brothers come together in freedom, celebrating the love, memories, and unbreakable bond that time can’t erase.” She added, “It is family first. A season of gratitude.”
Jackie reflected on the unexpected nature of the events that led to her uncle’s release, saying it will forever be etched in her mind and heart. She expressed gratitude with a praise to God.
Mr. Speight’s other siblings, Jim, Esther, and Salome, are living abroad, along with their 93-year-old father, Sam Speight Sr. Meanwhile, family members in Naivicula, Wainibuka, Tailevu, are eager to meet him.
A relative, who preferred to remain anonymous, shared their excitement, saying, “He went in when he was 43, and he is returning home now at 67. We’re looking forward to meeting him.”
