The Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) is not yet ready to function independently, according to its chairperson, Ratu Viliame Seruvakula. He stated that discussions on the council’s autonomy are ongoing, but various challenges need to be tackled before full independence can become a reality.
Ratu Viliame pointed out that while the notion of an independent GCC is being contemplated, it is premature at this stage. He emphasized the complexity of the legal requirements involved, stating that such changes cannot be made hastily. Additionally, the GCC has recently resumed its activities after a 16-year hiatus and is still in the process of rebuilding its structure.
He shared his experience of starting the operations alone for the first six months, highlighting the minimal staffing situation at the council. Ratu Viliame stressed the importance of continuing internal reviews, particularly concerning iTaukei administration, to ensure the council is on solid ground before considering independence.
The chairperson indicated that it might take until the following year, or possibly even longer, before the GCC stabilizes and can engage in serious discussions about its future autonomy. By that time, he hopes the council will be in a stronger position to assess its independence prospects.
