The Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) has disclosed the substantial expenses incurred during its recent meeting, with chairperson Ratu Viliame Seruvakula indicating that the funding was derived from the iTaukei Trust Fund. The two-day meeting totaled nearly $200,000.
Ratu Viliame openly acknowledged the costs, stating, “It’s no secret. The meeting has been costly; and we are mindful of that. We understand the financial implications, but the need for this gathering was too important to overlook.”
The meeting, which took place at the Grand Pacific Hotel, was relocated from the originally planned venue at Yatu Lau Lagoon Resort due to concerns about its adequacy for the event’s needs. Ratu Viliame commented on the venue change, saying, “Yatu Lau wasn’t conducive for our needs, so we had to look for another venue. The Grand Pacific Hotel (GPH) turned out to be an excellent choice.”
Looking ahead, Ratu Viliame announced that the next GCC meeting is set to take place in May, with optimism surrounding the possibility of it being hosted at the council’s new complex, which is currently under redevelopment. He expressed confidence that this would provide a more suitable and sustainable venue for future gatherings.
Overall, the GCC meeting reflects the council’s commitment to convening discussions that are deemed essential, despite the heavy costs involved. The anticipation of future meetings at the new complex suggests a positive direction for the council, aiming for improved facilities and better support for their activities.
