The Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) is advocating for changes to the 2013 Constitution, emphasizing the need for amendments to laws that directly impact the i-Taukei people. During a media briefing following the first day of meetings in Suva, GCC Chairperson Ratu Viliame Seruvakula expressed that a considerable number of laws, around 33, have significant implications for the i-Taukei community. Out of these, 16 have already been amended, while the remaining laws are still under review.
Seruvakula underscored that governmental action is necessary for these constitutional amendments to proceed. He highlighted that it’s crucial to maintain a realistic perspective, as changing these laws is not an immediate process, rather it is gradual and will require time and effort. Additionally, Solicitor-General Ropate Green Lomavatu engaged with the members to discuss the legislative changes currently under consideration.
The meeting is ongoing, and discussions are expected to continue as the GCC seeks to address the needs of the i-Taukei community in a thoughtful and structured manner.
This call for constitutional amendments reflects the GCC’s commitment to ensure that the rights and needs of the i-Taukei people are adequately represented and safeguarded. It demonstrates a proactive approach to governance and signifies a collective effort toward achieving a more inclusive legal framework. As discussions progress, there is an opportunity for constructive dialogue and collaboration between the government and the i-Taukei community, which could lead to positive developments in the legal landscape.
