The Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) is advocating for changes to the 2013 Constitution, emphasizing that amendments are necessary to address current laws affecting the i-Taukei people. During a press conference following the first day of their meeting in Suva, GCC Chairperson Ratu Viliame Seruvakula highlighted the need for legislative revisions to better serve the community’s interests.
Seruvakula noted that approximately 33 laws directly impact the i-Taukei population; of these, 16 have been modified, while the remaining laws are still under review. He urged the Government to take action to facilitate these necessary changes.
Acknowledging the complexity of the situation, Seruvakula explained that altering these laws is not an overnight task. He underscored the importance of making the best use of existing legal resources while recognizing the ongoing nature of this work. The discussions are expected to continue, indicating a proactive approach to addressing the needs of the i-Taukei people.
This call for constitutional amendments reflects an ongoing commitment to improving governance and representation for the i-Taukei people. As the meeting progresses, it may pave the way for a more inclusive legal framework that aligns with the community’s aspirations.
In summary, the GCC’s push for constitutional amendments represents a significant step toward enhancing the legal rights and protections of the i-Taukei people, with hopes for government responsiveness and collaborative progress.
