The Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) has disclosed the substantial financial implications of its recent meeting, which totaled nearly $200,000. Chairperson Ratu Viliame Seruvakula confirmed that the funding for the event was sourced from the iTaukei Trust Fund.
During his remarks, Ratu Viliame acknowledged the high costs involved, but emphasized the necessity of convening despite the financial burden. He stated, “It’s no secret. The meeting has been costly; and we are mindful of that. We understand the financial implications, but the need for this gathering was too important to overlook.”
The meeting took place at the Grand Pacific Hotel, a change from the last assembly held in March at Yatu Lau Lagoon Resort, due to concerns about the latter’s suitability for their requirements. Ratu Viliame praised the Grand Pacific Hotel as an excellent alternative.
Looking ahead, he shared that the next GCC meeting is slated for May, with aspirations to host it in the council’s new complex, which is currently under redevelopment. He expressed confidence that the new venue will better meet their needs for sustainability.
This proactive approach towards planning future meetings illustrates the GCC’s commitment to finding appropriate solutions while navigating financial constraints. It also highlights their dedication to ensuring effective gatherings for decision-making and community representation.
Overall, while the costs associated with the recent meeting raised concerns, the GCC’s foresight in securing a better venue for future gatherings reflects a hopeful outlook for enhanced council functions moving forward.
