The Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) has disclosed the substantial expenses incurred during its recent two-day meeting, amounting to nearly $200,000. Chairperson Ratu Viliame Seruvakula confirmed that the funding for the event was sourced from the iTaukei Trust Fund.

Acknowledging the financial impact, Ratu Viliame emphasized the importance of the gathering, stating, “It’s no secret. The meeting has been costly; and we are mindful of that. However, the need for this gathering was too crucial to overlook.”

The meeting, which took place at the Grand Pacific Hotel, had initially been planned for the Yatu Lau Lagoon Resort. Ratu Viliame explained that the original venue was deemed unsuitable, prompting the search for an alternative location, which ultimately proved to be a wise choice.

Looking ahead, the next GCC meeting is set for May, with hopes that it will take place at the council’s new complex currently undergoing redevelopment. Ratu Viliame expressed optimism, stating that the new venue will be more suitable and sustainable.

This transition points to a hopeful future for the GCC, as the establishment of a dedicated complex could enhance the council’s ability to convene effectively while potentially reducing costs in the long run. Such developments not only signify progress for the council but also demonstrate a commitment to improving infrastructure for cultural governance.
