A total of $200,000 was allocated to host the recent two-day Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva, as confirmed by GCC Chairperson Ratu Viliame Seruvakula. He explained that the funding came from the i-Taukei Trust Fund, which is designated for supporting the Council’s activities and initiatives.
While acknowledging the significant costs, Seruvakula emphasized that expenses had been meticulously managed. He pointed out that the venue constituted one of the largest expenses, but the decision to select the Grand Pacific Hotel was based on careful consideration of the Council’s requirements and the available options. The alternative venue did not provide the necessary facilities needed to cater to the meeting’s demands effectively, leading to the choice of the Grand Pacific Hotel, which ensured comfort and adequate provisions for the participants.
Looking ahead, Seruvakula announced that the next GCC meeting is scheduled for May 2025 at a newly constructed complex. This new location is anticipated to help reduce logistical expenses, particularly in relation to venue costs. He underlined that the budget for the recent meeting highlights the necessity of creating a conducive environment for discussions among paramount chiefs and provincial leaders, who convene to address critical issues affecting i-Taukei communities.
The meetings concluded yesterday, serving as an important platform for dialogue and decision-making within these communities.
This initiative showcases the ongoing commitment to supporting and facilitating meaningful conversations that influence the welfare of i-Taukei populations, and the anticipation of future gatherings highlights a proactive approach to meeting logistics and planning.
