The Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) has disclosed the substantial expenses incurred during its latest meeting, with chairperson Ratu Viliame Seruvakula noting that the funding came from the iTaukei Trust Fund. Ratu Viliame stated that the two-day gathering amounted to nearly $200,000.
“It’s no secret,” he remarked, acknowledging the financial burden of the meeting. “The meeting has been costly; and we are mindful of that. We understand the financial implications, but the need for this gathering was too important to overlook.”
Originally scheduled at the Yatu Lau Lagoon Resort, the meeting was moved to the Grand Pacific Hotel due to concerns about the previous venue’s suitability. Ratu Viliame expressed satisfaction with the Grand Pacific Hotel, stating it was an excellent alternative to meet their needs.
Looking ahead, Ratu Viliame mentioned that the next GCC meeting is planned for May, with expectations that it will be hosted at the council’s new complex, which is currently under redevelopment. He emphasized that this new venue will provide a more fitting and sustainable option.
The GCC’s commitment to holding these essential meetings, despite the costs, reflects its dedication to the community and governance. The anticipated new complex may not only enhance the experience of future meetings but also demonstrate progress and support for the iTaukei heritage and culture.
Overall, the GCC is taking steps to ensure that its gatherings are more effective and sustainable in the future, fostering hope for continued engagement and development in the community.
