The Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) has disclosed the substantial expenses incurred during its recent meeting, with chairperson Ratu Viliame Seruvakula announcing that the financial support came from the iTaukei Trust Fund. The two-day gathering cost nearly $200,000, a fact that Ratu Viliame openly acknowledged.
“It’s no secret,” he stated. “The meeting has been costly; and we are mindful of that. We understand the financial implications, but the need for this gathering was too important to overlook.”
Previously hosted at the Yatu Lau Lagoon Resort in March, this latest meeting took place at the Grand Pacific Hotel due to concerns regarding the fitness of the original venue. “Yatu Lau wasn’t conducive for our needs, so we had to look for another venue. The Grand Pacific Hotel (GPH) turned out to be an excellent choice,” he explained.
Looking ahead, Ratu Viliame announced that the next GCC meeting is scheduled for next May, with aspirations to hold it at the council’s new complex, which is currently under redevelopment. He expressed optimism that the new venue will offer a more suitable and sustainable space for future meetings.
This proactive approach to securing a better meeting venue reflects the ongoing commitment of the GCC to enhance its operational effectiveness. Their efforts to find a more fitting location emphasize a dedication to improving the council’s functionality while being mindful of financial considerations.
In summary, the GCC is taking steps to ensure that their meetings are effective while acknowledging the financial impact of their choices and working towards sustainability with the new complex. This foresight demonstrates a promising future for the council’s endeavors.
