GCC Eyes Statutory Trust: A New Era for iTaukei Relations?

The Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) is progressing toward becoming a statutory trust. GCC chairman Ratu Viliame Seruvakula announced that the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs is collaborating with the Attorney-General’s office on this initiative. He emphasized the desire to avoid past situations where any government could alter or manipulate the GCC’s recommendations.

“By transitioning to a statutory trust, we aim to maintain independence from government influence, allowing us to engage openly with the government on issues affecting the iTaukei community while also considering the implications for other ethnic groups,” he stated.

He added that if challenges arise, they can address them cooperatively, fostering dialogue with other communities rather than being constrained by the political agendas of the current government.
