The Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) is advocating for amendments to the 2013 Constitution to better reflect the needs and rights of the i-Taukei people. During a media conference held after their first meeting in Suva, GCC Chairperson Ratu Viliame Seruvakula emphasized that many existing laws impacting the i-Taukei require changes. He pointed out that out of approximately 33 laws affecting the community, only 16 have been amended, while the remaining ones are still under review.

Seruvakula highlighted the importance of government action to facilitate these necessary constitutional changes. He acknowledged the complexities involved, stating that the process cannot be rushed and that the existing laws cannot be altered overnight. Instead, he urged for a realistic approach to utilize current resources effectively while adapting to the laws that are established.

The ongoing discussions during the meeting demonstrate the GCC’s commitment to addressing the legal needs of the i-Taukei people. This consistent dialogue may lead to constructive outcomes, ensuring that their voices are heard in the legislative process.

As the meeting continues, there is hope that a collaborative effort between the GCC and the government will pave the way for more equitable governance that resonates with the aspirations of the i-Taukei community.
