Backyard gardener Jasnita Ali, 32, is set to expand her hydroponic farm to a commercial level following a grant of US$5,000 (F$11,228.75) awarded to her last week. The grant was provided by the Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) program during a ceremony at Hilton Fiji Resort on Denarau.

Ms. Ali plans to utilize the funding to enhance her business by purchasing materials to expand her farm’s infrastructure. “We aim to produce fresh, organic, chemical and pesticide-free vegetables and offer them to consumers at much lower prices than currently available,” she stated.

Her business, Nature’s Farm Fresh Supplies (NFFS), operates as a small-scale hydroponics farm located in Chinakoti, Ba. Ms. Ali commenced her venture in September 2022, inspired by concerns over the rising risks of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the region. She emphasizes the importance of healthy eating for an improved lifestyle.

NFFS employs the Dutch Bucket System alongside the Deep Flow Technique (DFT) to cultivate crops across a quarter-acre of land. “We incorporate innovative technology such as the automated dosing system from Bluelab for our operations,” said the mother of one.

The hydroponic system enables year-round cultivation of various crops, ensuring a continuous supply of fresh, chemical-free vegetables. Ms. Ali also highlights her commitment to inclusivity by employing individuals with disabilities, members of the LGBTIQ community, and unemployed youth.

Reflecting on the challenges faced as a traditional farmer, Ms. Ali noted the difficulties posed by flooding and drought on crop production. However, she believes the hydroponic system allows a diverse range of vegetables to thrive without the impacts of climate change.

GIST’s Startup training program provides in-country intensive business training to empower young innovators and entrepreneurs in science and technology through practical training and mentorship from US experts, in collaboration with local partners.
