Seven members of the Group of Nine (G9) opposition MPs are set to be sworn in as Ministers and Assistant Ministers in the Coalition Government today. The ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the State House and will be overseen by President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka confirmed that three of the G9 MPs will take on full ministerial roles, as he stated, “Yes, I can confirm that G9 MPs will be sworn in tomorrow (today) – some as ministers and others as assistant ministers.” The Ministers being appointed include Ioane Naivalurua as Minister for Policing, Viliame Naupoto as Minister for Immigration, and Mosese Bulitavu as Minister for Climate Change. Additionally, the following individuals will serve as Assistant Ministers: Naisa Tuinaceva (Transport), Josaia Niudamu (Justice), Penioni Ravunawa (Health), and Aliki Bia (Information). Notably, two G9 MPs, Alipate Tuicolo and Taito Rokomatu, will not hold ministerial positions.

This shift in political roles signifies a considerable transformation in Fiji’s political landscape. The G9, which formed in July 2024 after the deregistration of the FijiFirst party, represents a break from the traditional opposition as they are now aligning with the government, a situation not directly addressed by Fiji’s 2013 Constitution. Prime Minister Rabuka’s previous indications of a willingness to collaborate with the G9 suggest a potential new direction for governance in Fiji.

Attorney-General Graham Leung acknowledged the unprecedented nature of this integration, describing it as “uncharted territory.” Hence, the constitutional ambiguity surrounding the roles of crossbench MPs may pave the way for innovative governance structures.

As the G9 MPs officially step into their new roles, it provides an opportunity for a fresh perspective in the government, possibly enhancing collaborative efforts that could lead to improved public policy and governance in Fiji.

In conclusion, the integration of G9 MPs into ministerial roles might not only strengthen Prime Minister Rabuka’s coalition but also offer a unique approach to political collaboration that could have long-lasting positive effects on the governance of the nation. By harnessing diverse perspectives, the government may be better equipped to address the complexities of today’s challenges.
