Construction on the Fiji National University (FNU) Naiyaca Campus in Labasa is set to recommence next year, with a target completion date slated for 2026. The ambitious project, which began in 2018, has experienced significant delays due to various interruptions, leading to a six-year postponement of a campus that holds the promise of enhanced educational opportunities for the Northern Division.
FNU reaffirmed its dedication to completing the campus during recent communications, with Vice Chancellor Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba acknowledging the project’s challenges while emphasizing a positive outlook for the future. “We understand the significance of this project and the difficulties it has faced. However, our focus is now firmly on the future,” Professor Nabobo-Baba stated, highlighting the university’s commitment to building a campus that meets the needs of the local community with excellence.
A phased development strategy will be implemented moving forward, focusing first on essential facilities like classrooms and student amenities to ensure operational functionality. Following the initial phase, additional infrastructure needs will be addressed in subsequent stages.
FNU is actively seeking funding partners, engaging with government agencies, private investors, and philanthropic organizations to secure the necessary financial support for the project’s completion. Though the new budget details have not been disclosed, the university is committed to fiscal responsibility while ensuring high-quality facilities.
Professor Nabobo-Baba expressed confidence in the project’s potential to promote educational access, foster local development, and contribute positively to the growth of Fiji’s Northern Division. She assured that all funds allocated to the project would be used transparently and effectively, promising regular updates to the public on the development progress.
As FNU looks toward 2026, the university remains committed to transforming the Naiyaca Campus into a vital educational hub that will benefit future generations. With renewed focus and strategic planning, the restoration of the campus stands as a promising development for the region.
This initiative not only signifies a step towards better education but also reflects the university’s resilience in overcoming challenges. The anticipation surrounding the completion of the Naiyaca Campus brings hope for a brighter educational landscape in Fiji, empowering the community and paving the way for future growth.
