A group of cousins turned a casual gathering around a basin of yaqona into a vibrant musical journey, forming their own band under the guidance of their uncle Oliver McCaig. The band, now known as Chapter 5 (C5), reflects their legacy as fifth-generation musicians descended from settlers from Wallis & Futuna.
C5 has been making waves in Fiji’s music scene, performing weekly at Mana Coffee in Suva. Drummer and co-manager Nicholas Smith shared that the band’s formation began a year ago with just three members: himself, lead guitarist Michael Yalani, and rhythm guitarist Niko Yalani. Over time, the band expanded to include bassist Filipe Yalani, along with cousins Maya and Niu Smith, who have added a fresh sound, particularly with popular songs.
Every Wednesday, the band holds jam sessions at Mana Coffee, expressing gratitude for the platform that has contributed to their growth. Their musical style is primarily rooted in reggae but varies based on their audience. Looking ahead, they are excited to perform at the upcoming 2024 Bounty Reggae Christmas Festival on December 21, where they promise to deliver a lively and engaging show filled with captivating reggae covers.
The band members draw inspiration from local artists like Olsen J Sefo and Miles Manulevu, as well as from family influences, including Nicholas’s father, Sanfred Smith, and brother, Sebastian Yalani. Despite the challenges they face, they embrace them, seeing them as opportunities for growth.
C5 invites everyone to join them for a memorable experience at the Bounty Reggae Music Festival, showcasing their dedication to their craft and their commitment to entertaining their community.
This story highlights the power of music and family bonds, showing how a simple gathering can lead to meaningful artistic expression. It serves as a reminder that with passion and support, aspirations can come to life.
