Yasawa athlete Naece Vatanitawake is fully embracing the excitement of the Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games held yesterday at Suva’s HFC Bank Stadium. Vatanitawake acknowledged the long journey from his village of Yasawa-i-Rara and expressed the hard work his team had put in to aim for medals at this competition.
He remarked on the contrasts between life in Suva and his village, noting the accessibility of resources in the city. “Everything is accessible here; back in the village, we have to search for what we need to feed ourselves,” he reflected. Despite these challenges, he expressed gratitude for the chance to compete, highlighting his passion for sprinting.
Vatanitawake shared the struggles his athletics squad faced, including financial limitations and rigorous training sessions. However, he remained optimistic about their progress, bolstered by the support of his parents who encouraged him to enjoy the experience.
He celebrated a personal achievement, having been named dux of Bukama Village School, a surprise he did not expect. His family was thrilled about this accolade, even preparing a feast in his honor. Additionally, Vatanitawake successfully passed the Fiji Year Eight examination.
Motivating his peers, he encouraged them to focus on their studies while also engaging in sports. “If you find yourself weak in academic work then lean on to sports,” he advised. Vatanitawake also mentioned his aspirations on the rugby field, as he plays first-five eight, with hopes of emulating his favorite player, Flying Fijians’ Caleb Muntz.
This story not only highlights the dedication and talent of young athletes like Vatanitawake but also serves as an inspiring reminder of how perseverance, faith, and a supportive community can lift individuals toward achieving their dreams in both academia and sports. It is a wonderful reflection on the potential that lies ahead for those who strive and believe in themselves.
