Naeca Vatanitawake, a young athlete from Yasawa, is fully embracing the spirit of the Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games held yesterday at Suva’s HFC Bank Stadium. The journey from his village, Yasawa-i-Rara, to the capital was challenging, yet Vatanitawake and his team have worked tirelessly to compete for medals in this significant event.
Reflecting on his experiences, Vatanitawake shared insights about the stark contrasts between life in Suva and his home village. He noted that while everything is readily accessible in the city, in the village, resources often require much effort to gather. Despite these challenges, he expresses his passion for sprinting and gratitude to God for providing him with the strength to participate.
The athlete discussed the hurdles faced by his athletics squad in preparation for the games, including financial constraints and rigorous training sessions. Nevertheless, the team maintained hope and determination to progress. Vatanitawake mentioned the support from his family, who encouraged him to focus on enjoyment during the competition.
An academic achiever, Vatanitawake proudly announced his accomplishment as the dux of Bukama village school, stating, “I didn’t believe that I’d win it.” His success has excited his family, who are planning a celebratory feast. Additionally, he has successfully passed the Fiji Year Eight examination.
In a message to his peers, Vatanitawake encouraged them to excel in both academics and sports, suggesting that those who may struggle academically should seek balance through sporting activities. He also revealed his ambitions in rugby, where he plays first-five-eight, aspiring to follow in the footsteps of his favorite player, Flying Fijians’ Caleb Muntz, with hopes of becoming a Flying Fijian himself in the future.
This story highlights the perseverance of young athletes who face significant obstacles yet continue to pursue their passions. Vatanitawake’s journey serves as an inspiring reminder of the importance of hard work and determination, as well as the supportive role that family and community play in the lives of young talents.
In a broader context, stories like Vatanitawake’s show the potential for growth and achievement that exists in the youth of Fiji, fostering hope for a brighter future.
