Ponipate Loganimasi made the bold decision to pursue a rugby career instead of enrolling in university, and his father, Joeli Kalougata, encouraged him to follow his passion. In just under two years with the national sevens team, Loganimasi has made a significant impact in the rugby world.

This year, he not only secured an Olympic silver medal with the men’s rugby sevens team but also became the sole Fijian player selected for the World Rugby Men’s Sevens Dream Team of the Year, as announced recently. His impressive year continued in September during the World Rugby Pacific Nations Cup, where he made his debut for the Flying Fijians against Japan, scoring two tries in a remarkable 41-17 victory that helped Fiji retain the title. In October, he signed with the Fijian Drua, furthering his professional career.

Loganimasi hails from Koroalau, Cakaudrove, and has roots in Lovoni, Ono-i-Lau. His father expressed immense pride in his achievements, recalling how family encouraged him to follow an academic path at Brigham Young University in Utah, but Loganimasi chose rugby instead. Kalougata advised him to trust in God regarding his rugby journey, emphasizing the importance of hard work, humility, and a willingness to learn, qualities that would elevate him in his sport.

Moreover, Loganimasi was also a gold medalist at the Coca-Cola Games, where he excelled in the 200m race during his time at Navatu Secondary School, showcasing his talents in both rugby and indoor basketball.

Included among the other players in the Dream Team are stars such as Selvyn Davids from South Africa and Antoine Dupont from France. Loganimasi’s journey is a testament to the fact that following one’s passion, guided by family support and faith, can lead to extraordinary achievements in sports.

This story highlights the importance of chasing dreams and reminds us of the potential inherent in each individual, encouraging others to believe in their paths, whatever they may be.
