Jason Liwuslili, a 29-year-old graduate with a Diploma in Environmental Science from the University of the South Pacific, emphasizes the critical need for tree conservation, stating that those who neglect it could face a world unsustainable for humanity. His journey from Vanuatu to Fiji exemplifies not only his pursuit of personal education but also his commitment to environmental conservation and community development.
Raised in Vanuatu, Liwuslili encountered numerous obstacles on his path to higher education. “I wasn’t able to finish secondary school; I only made it to Year 11,” he revealed. After leaving school, he was motivated by his mother’s support to return to his studies, finally completing his education with determination in 2015. “It took me a long time to start my USP journey,” he said, detailing his progression through basic writing skills to foundation courses.
His perseverance culminated in successfully receiving his degree. His mother, a business owner, and his late father, who passed away in 2015, were significant sources of support throughout his educational journey.
Liwuslili moved to Fiji in 2021 amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which posed unique challenges. “The first challenge was understanding the culture. When we arrived, I was put in jail due to restrictions on social gatherings for two days,” he explained. Financial difficulties also emerged, despite being a sponsored student. “Although our personal allowance wasn’t substantial, I was grateful as it was more than I would have received back home.”
Despite these challenges, Liwuslili adapted to life in Fiji and furthered his studies. He notes that his experiences there significantly shaped his understanding of education and cultural adaptation.
His academic focus is on environmental management, fueled by a passion for preserving natural resources and combating climate change. He recently began working with an NGO in Vanuatu, where he plans to utilize his knowledge to manage natural resources effectively and tackle environmental issues. He advocates for the importance of effective management in preserving cultural heritage and ensuring sustainable development in the Pacific.
Liwuslili offers this advice: “Whatever you do, do your best. We all have different paths and challenges. Understand your goals, and seize opportunities when they arise.”
