Jason Liwuslili, a 29-year-old graduate with a Diploma in Environmental Science from the University of the South Pacific, shares a powerful message: a failure to protect trees will lead to an unsustainable world for humanity. His educational journey from Vanuatu to Fiji underscores not only his pursuit of knowledge but also his commitment to environmental conservation and community development.
Growing up in Vanuatu, Liwuslili faced significant obstacles in his education. He did not complete secondary school, stopping at Year 11 before leaving the educational system. However, motivated by his mother’s support and a strong desire to learn, he returned to his studies in 2015 with renewed determination.
Liwuslili began his education at the University of the South Pacific by taking basic writing skills courses before progressing to pre-university and foundation courses. His hard work ultimately culminated in earning his degree, a proud achievement made possible by the encouragement of his mother, a business owner, and the memory of his late father.
His transition to Fiji in 2021 happened during the COVID-19 pandemic, bringing additional challenges. Upon arrival, he struggled to adapt to a new culture and faced restrictions due to the pandemic, which resulted in a brief detention due to social gathering laws. Financial constraints also posed difficulties, despite being a sponsored student.
Despite these challenges, Liwuslili adjusted to life in Fiji and continued his studies, finding that his experiences profoundly shaped his understanding of education and cultural integration. His studies focused on environmental management, driven by a passion for preserving natural resources and addressing climate change.
Recently, he secured a position with an NGO in Vanuatu, aiming to apply his knowledge to tackle environmental challenges and manage natural resources effectively. Liwuslili emphasizes that effective management is vital for preserving cultural heritage and fostering sustainable development in the Pacific region.
He advises others to do their best in their pursuits, acknowledging that everyone faces their own set of challenges. He encourages individuals to identify their goals and seize opportunities when they arise.
