Nafitalai Uluinikorotabu, known as Nafi, embodies the message that a wheelchair should not limit one’s potential. At 34 years old, he has transformed a tragic past into a story of resilience and determination. Born and raised in Suva and originally from Navukebuli Village in the northern province of Macuata, Nafi reflects on how a life-altering accident shaped his perspective.

Growing up in a typical iTaukei household, Nafi emphasized the importance of family and faith in his upbringing. After completing his primary education at the International School Suva and Holy Trinity Anglican School, he attended the prestigious Queen Victoria School. Nafi aspired to become a pilot and explore the world, but everything changed on December 28, 2005.

While swimming during a holiday in Vanua Levu, he misjudged the depth of the river and dived headfirst, resulting in a devastating spinal injury. The accident left him paralyzed from the waist down, forcing him to confront a new reality. Nafi recounts his time in rehabilitation as a pivotal period filled with struggle against depression and thoughts of suicide.

Support from his church community and family played a crucial role in his recovery. Visits from friends encouraged and uplifted him, and he found solace in the biblical promise that God is always present. After being discharged, he gained strength from the support of his large extended family, which helped him move forward.

In 2009, Nafi ventured into the disability sector after being encouraged to join the Spinal Injury Association (SIA) of Fiji. This experience broadened his horizons and inspired him as he met individuals with disabilities who successfully navigated life, working regular jobs. Currently serving as the Disability Inclusion Officer at SIA, Nafi’s advocacy work has taken him around the world, including trips to Washington DC and Sydney.

His mission revolves around ensuring that individuals with disabilities in Fiji can fully participate in society. Nafi is dedicated to empowering others by motivating them to leave their homes and engage with the community. He highlights the challenges faced by people with disabilities, including stigma and accessibility issues, and advocates for improvements in services, especially for those in rural areas.

For Nafi, a negative mindset is the most significant disability of all. He believes acknowledging one’s potential is key to overcoming challenges. His uplifting message encourages others to remember that regardless of their struggles, there is always hope for a brighter future.
