Faisal Syafii’s life took a heartbreaking turn during the Indian Ocean tsunami 20 years ago. On December 26, 2004, while celebrating his birthday with his wife Siti Syamsiah and their two daughters, a catastrophic earthquake struck Banda Aceh, ultimately leading to the devastating tsunami that claimed more than 250,000 lives across several countries.
Faisal vividly recalls the last moment he shared with Siti as she brought him coffee that morning and wished him a happy birthday. When the earthquake hit, he quickly grabbed his daughters, Eka and Selyna, from their beds and sought safety in his workshop. Despite the initial quake’s intensity, it was only a precursor to the larger and life-altering tremors that followed, leading to the tsunami’s arrival.
When the tsunami struck, Faisal fought valiantly to save his family, but he lost Siti in the chaos. He and his daughters found intermittent safety, but the harrowing search for his wife revealed the horrific aftermath of the disaster. The scene he witnessed was one of panic, loss, and despair as he helped his daughters while desperately searching for Siti.
In the wake of the tsunami, Faisal and his daughters survived the days following through self-sufficiency while waiting for aid to arrive. Eventually, with the support of organizations like the Red Cross, they were rescued and put in touch with Faisal’s relatives in New Zealand. With great resilience, Faisal made a new life for himself and his daughters in New Zealand, where they slowly rebuilt their lives.
Faisal secured a job using his skills as a welder and his daughters began their education. Over the years, he found love again, marrying Rini Handayani in 2009 and welcoming a son in 2012. His daughters, now successful adults, continue to make him proud. Selyna has earned her Master’s degree and works as a nurse, while Eka has begun her career in engineering.
Reflecting on his journey, Faisal sees his story as one of hope and resilience. He emphasizes the importance of never giving up, despite the tragedies one might face. As he looks towards the future, he remains open about his desire to reconnect with his past—specifically with Aceh and the friends who survived the tsunami.
Faisal’s experience is not just a tale of survival, but also a reminder of the strength of the human spirit. It showcases how, even in the face of unimaginable loss, one can begin anew and find happiness again. Faisal shares a message of hope, urging others to persevere through their struggles, and emphasizes gratitude for the support he received throughout his journey.
As he now embraces life on the ocean, he reconciles with his past and feels a sense of peace, conversing with the memory of his beloved wife. This journey demonstrates the resilience of a family that, against all odds, has chosen to move forward and thrive.
