From Tragedy to Triumph: A Graduate’s Inspiring Journey

Lafaele Tominiko’s journey to graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of the South Pacific is a testament to the saying, “It takes a village to raise a child.” Hailing from Samoa with strong ties to Tamavua Village in Naitasiri, Tominiko faced the tragic loss of both parents at a young age, which fueled his determination to succeed.

Despite the challenges, he found strength in the unwavering support of his mother’s family, who helped guide him and his siblings through difficult times. Reflecting on his experiences, Tominiko expressed deep appreciation for his family, acknowledging their love and encouragement that shaped his path.

As the youngest of four siblings, he recalled the hardships he endured, including losing his father at three and his mother at nine years old. “This achievement would not have been possible without my family. The support I received was a major source of motivation,” he stated.

Tominiko shared his heartfelt desire for his parents to witness his accomplishments. “I wish my parents could have been here to see me walk to the podium to receive my bachelor’s degree, but I am thankful for the family that filled that void,” he reflected.

He also recounted moments when he faced obstacles that made him want to give up, including going without lunch and walking long distances from school to town. “Despite these challenges, they pushed me to achieve my dream,” he noted, highlighting that his relatives treated him and his siblings like their own children.

As a private student at USP, Tominiko received financial support from his brother and aunt in the United States. Looking ahead, he plans to work and continue his education. His message to fellow students is to persevere: “Keep going, and when you feel like giving up, remember why you started in the first place.”
