After two decades in the tourism sector, Meli Rokotakala discovered his true passion during the global crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, Meli was forced to leave his job in Nadi and return to his home in Nabalebale Village, Cakaudrove. This period of uncertainty prompted him to reflect on his talents and aspirations.
While enjoying the tranquility of his backyard garden, Meli became captivated by the stunning beauty of flowers. This newfound interest in horticulture inspired him to start creating decorative items for homes, a hobby that quickly evolved into a flourishing business. Drawing on his past experiences with South Sea Cruises, Fiji Club, and Tuitai Adventure Cruises, Meli decided to establish his own enterprise—Meli’s Artfeast Investment.
Since launching his business, Meli has become a highly sought-after event decorator in Savusavu and Labasa. He has lent his artistic touch to a range of events, including birthday parties, weddings, funerals, corporate functions, and religious ceremonies. As a perfectionist, Meli carefully selects flowers from his garden, ensuring that every arrangement showcases his keen sense of color and design. Additionally, his entrepreneurial journey includes opening a savings account with the BSP branch in Savusavu, marking an important milestone toward financial independence.
Meli eagerly participated in a three-day workshop organized by BSP in collaboration with Australian Business Volunteers (ABV) under the THRIVE programme. This initiative, which stands for “Together, Helping to build a Resilient, Inclusive, and Vibrant Economy,” aims to provide entrepreneurs with essential business skills. Meli recognized the significance of effectively managing a business, understanding that success is largely based on the ability to handle profits and losses.
Reflecting on employment trends, Meli noted that not everyone is cut out for traditional jobs. He believes that some young individuals have the potential to become successful entrepreneurs and should receive the support they need to thrive. As the eldest of four siblings and a former student of Savusavu Secondary School, Meli underscored the importance of pursuing work that brings genuine joy. He encouraged people to seek out what truly makes them happy rather than remaining in careers simply for the sake of their families.
Expressing his gratitude to BSP and ABV for the workshop he attended in Labasa, Meli described it as a life-changing experience. He motivates young people to explore their unique talents and to focus on contributing to their communities instead of merely conforming to societal expectations.
The Fiji THRIVE programme originated as the “Your Enterprise Scheme” (YES) at BSP headquarters in Papua New Guinea in 2019. In partnership with ABV, it was established to empower Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in PNG through valuable knowledge and skills. BSP Fiji adapted the programme for the local market, renaming it THRIVE to reflect its commitment to fostering a resilient, inclusive, and vibrant economy.
