From Suva to Sunshine: Australian Couple Reconnects with Fiji’s Heart

An Australian couple, Owen Twist and his wife Christine, are thrilled to be back in Fiji after many years. They were among over 2,000 passengers on the P&O Cruises Australia ship that docked in Lautoka on Monday.

The Twists had previously lived in Fiji during the early 1970s, where they were involved with the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church in Suva. “It feels so good to be back in Fiji. We were hoping to meet some of our local friends that we have contacted through social media,” Mr. Twist expressed.

The couple came to Fiji for what was intended to be a two-year stay but ended up residing there for nine years due to their fondness for the local community. “Then I had to go home, but Fiji has always held a special place in our hearts,” he added.

Their daughters, who are now nurses, also spent part of their childhood in Fiji, reinforcing the family’s strong connections to the islands. The couple’s return was marked by nostalgic memories and admiration for the relationships they fostered during their time in Fiji.

During their visit, the couple purchased Fijian souvenirs, including handicrafts from woodcarver Jone Sito. After their stop in Lautoka, the cruise ship is set to continue to Taveuni before heading back to Sydney.
