Delai Naiqasiqasi is set to have a new resident as Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, the Tui Cakau, formally takes office today following his inauguration ceremony at State House this morning.

While he is known for his political career and his role as Speaker of the House of Representatives, not many are aware of the struggles he faced during his early life. Growing up in humble conditions, Ratu Naiqama demonstrated determination and resilience that would ultimately lead him to success.

Friends and acquaintances describe his journey from his childhood in the suburbs of Suva to the village of Somosomo on Taveuni as remarkable but not surprising, given his strong character. Raised primarily by his mother, Adi Unaisi Lalabalavu, while his father, Ratu Glanville Wellington Lalabalavu, served in the military during times of conflict in Malaya, Ratu Naiqama’s early life was marked by challenges.

He received his education at Suva Methodist Primary School, Dudley Intermediate and Secondary School, and completed his secondary schooling at Ratu Sukuna Memorial School. Following graduation, he moved into a civil service cadet facility, which was affiliated with the Gaunavou Rugby Club, laying the groundwork for a promising career.

Starting at the Native Land Trust Board, Ratu Naiqama quickly established himself in land and estate management. Longtime friend Savenaca Kamikamica remembers Ratu Naiqama as someone destined for great things. He successfully pursued higher education, earning a Master’s degree in International Development from Clark University in Massachusetts, along with a Post Graduate Diploma in Integrated Rural or Regional Development Planning from a Development Study Centre in Israel, and even attended classes at Harvard University.

Many believe that his impressive climb from Ratu Sukuna Memorial School to the presidency of Fiji reflects his deep-seated commitment to serving his community. Mr. Kamikamica emphasizes that Ratu Naiqama’s ability to connect with individuals from various backgrounds, whether a chief or a farmer, makes him an exemplary leader.

Kamikamica reflects fondly on their travels together, highlighting how Ratu Naiqama has always maintained his humility and compassion. His past as a talented rugby player, who had the potential to join the national team, adds another dimension to his diverse background.

In summary, Ratu Naiqama’s ascent to the presidency can inspire many as a testament to his tenacity and dedication to serve. His journey reflects the power of resilience and the potential to overcome adversity to achieve greatness. With his rich background and strong rapport with the people, there is hope that he will lead Fiji towards a brighter future.
