Meretinai Vaturaiyawa, a student at Nakorotubu Secondary School, has expressed her intention to pursue higher education at the Fiji National University (FNU) with aspirations of becoming a nurse.
During the FNU Open Day, her focus was on Food Science, and she explored the opportunities within the College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Science. The 16-year-old is keen to delve deeper into the medical field, particularly considering the health center located in Namarai Village, Nakorotubu, Ra, which currently lacks representation from her village.
Vaturaiyawa has set her sights on working at the Namarai health center in the future. She appreciated the insights gained from the FNU Open Day in Nasinu, leading her to choose FNU as her preferred institution.
She shared that her school was established in 2020 and that she enrolled in Year Nine in 2021. However, she noted challenges regarding the availability of teachers for critical subjects. For the first two terms of the year, her school did not have Biology and Chemistry instructors, and while a teacher has been found for Term Three, they still lack a Home Economics teacher. The school’s vice-principal has been supplementing this gap by providing worksheets for Home Economics classes.
