Vika Nakacia, a young and determined rugby player from Yasawa, has turned her struggles into a source of strength. Faced with financial constraints that prevented her from affording transportation to her training sessions in Lautoka, Vika refused to give up on her ambitions. She often resorted to walking or running long distances to attend her practices at Nadovu Grounds, showcasing her commitment and resilience.
Reflecting on her journey, Nakacia shared, “Sometimes I had no fare to attend training, so I had to run and walk to our trainings.” She acknowledged the challenges that women in sports often face, including negative perceptions and discouragement. “It is hard when you try to play the sport you love and you are discouraged,” she noted. Despite these hurdles, Nakacia persevered, emphasizing that the sacrifices she made have contributed to her achievements.
With a background in both rugby union and rugby league, Nakacia has established herself as a prominent figure in her sport and is now set to represent Fiji at the highly anticipated Dubai 7s. “I am really hopeful to do my best and make Fiji proud,” she expressed, demonstrating her optimistic outlook as she prepares for this opportunity.
The story of Vika Nakacia serves as an inspiring reminder of how determination and hard work can triumph over adversity. Her journey highlights the importance of resilience in pursuing one’s dreams, encouraging others, particularly women in sports, to remain steadfast despite obstacles. As she steps onto the international stage, Nakacia’s dedication may not only pave the way for her own success but also inspire a new generation of female athletes in Fiji and beyond to chase their goals with unwavering courage.
