Luisa Radovu, a single mother of four, has demonstrated remarkable resilience as she navigates life’s challenges. Despite facing significant adversities, including dropping out of school after sixth grade, being estranged from her family during her early years as a mother, and enduring four unsuccessful marriages, she has fought tirelessly to create a stable life for herself and her children.

Ms. Radovu has held various jobs throughout her life, including positions as a housemaid and baker. Additionally, she pursued maritime studies, obtaining multiple certificates in sailing by enrolling and financing her education independently. During her youth, she gained valuable experience by working and sailing in numerous resorts, helping her overcome past struggles.

Currently, at the age of 55, Ms. Radovu operates a canteen business in Wailoku, which she established in 2017 to serve the local community. She also offers food parcels and pastries at the Suva market whenever possible.

“I only reached class six in education, but I managed to make it to Fiji National University for maritime studies. I signed myself up and paid for my own fees to study sailing, where I graduated with five certificates,” Ms. Radovu shared. “Before that, I made a living working as a house girl and in cafes and restaurants, where I cooked and baked.”

She participated in the Start Improve Your Business (SIYB) training organized by the Ministry of Trade, which she credits for reigniting her passion for her business. “To be very honest, there were times when I lost hope in my business. It was really challenging, and I felt overwhelmed by the pressure,” she admitted. “But the training gave me hope and confidence to progress and improve my business. It also taught me how to provide better customer service.”

Looking ahead, Ms. Radovu aspires to expand her business and hopes to open a larger shop that will be more accessible to her community. She is currently awaiting a government grant from the training she completed, which will help financially elevate her business.
