From Struggles to Success: The Inspiring Journey of a New Lawyer

The path to bar admission has been a lengthy journey for Lanieta Gonewai Bilitaki, taking nearly 15 years. Despite facing numerous challenges, she never considered giving up. On Friday, the 34-year-old was one of 45 new law graduates from the University of the South Pacific who were officially welcomed to the bar by acting Chief Justice Salesi Temo.

Ms. Bilitaki reflected on her arduous journey, emphasizing the importance of trusting the process. At one point, peer pressure led her to drop out of university, compelling her to seek employment before she could pursue her education again. Tragically, she also lost her father in 2021 during this time.

“I faced many difficulties, losing people along the way but gaining invaluable lessons from those I encountered,” Ms. Bilitaki shared. Despite the hardships, the dream of completing her education never waned.

Throughout her trials, she remained hopeful that one day she would stand as a fully qualified lawyer. “I owe a great deal to my family, especially my late father, who instilled discipline and guidance in us,” she expressed.

Ms. Bilitaki noted the unwavering support from her paternal family, including her uncles, aunties, and cousins, who have consistently motivated her. She also acknowledged her maternal family’s steadfast support, especially her mother, Veranaisi Gonewai, whose prayers and encouragement have been a constant source of strength.

“My mother has been our light of hope, always cheering for my siblings and me,” she said. She also expressed gratitude towards her siblings and friends, particularly Setareki Kalesita, Maikeli Talatala, Sevanaia Tuiwasa, and Tulevu Tora, for their support throughout her journey. Additionally, she thanked her husband Paulo, who is currently serving in Yemen, and his family for their encouragement.

Ms. Bilitaki urged young people not to let their family circumstances hinder their ambitions. “If you stumble, rise again. Never give up. Whether it takes three years or ten, if your heart is committed, you will realize your dreams,” she encouraged.

At present, Ms. Bilitaki is employed by the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection.
