From Struggles to Success: Tavatuilagi’s Inspiring Journey Through Depression

Waisale Taufa Tavatuilagi has overcome significant challenges, including depression, to achieve a long-held dream of earning a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and Finance from the University of the South Pacific. After graduating on Friday, Tavatuilagi reflected on how his academic journey began over a decade ago with aspirations of becoming a lawyer, which ultimately did not come to fruition.

Choosing to pivot his goals, he set his sights on becoming a bank officer and joining the ranks of USP alumni. In achieving this milestone, Tavatuilagi emphasized the importance of cultivating a positive mindset and surrounding himself with supportive individuals. He noted, “I associated myself more with quality people, and finding the right support network.”

The 33-year-old, originally from Nabouciwa in Tailevu, also acknowledged the vital role of his family in his journey. He expressed gratitude for their unwavering support, stating, “With the right attitude and strong support system from my family was the crucial part of my journey.” Tavatuilagi shared that battling depression was one of the toughest challenges he faced while pursuing his degree.

He credited his peers for believing in him and motivating him to persevere despite numerous struggles. “It’s all to pass with the peers who had a lot of faith in me,” he said. He concluded by recognizing the central role of faith in his life, remarking, “God was right at the center of it all, I’m just grateful for the gift of family and friendship.”
