From Struggles to Success: One Grad’s Triumph Over Depression

Waisale Taufa Tavatuilagi has overcome significant personal challenges, including depression, to achieve his long-term goal of earning a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and Finance from the University of the South Pacific. Graduating on Friday, Mr. Tavatuilagi expressed that obtaining his degree had been a dream of his for many years.

A decade ago, he aspired to become a lawyer, but when that did not come to fruition, he redirected his ambitions towards becoming a bank officer and joining the ranks of USP alumni. He emphasized that developing a positive mindset and surrounding himself with supportive and quality people were essential steps in his journey.

With strong backing from his family and a determination to overcome his struggles, Mr. Tavatuilagi focused on viewing situations positively. Originally from Nabouciwa, Nakelo in Tailevu, he has maternal ties to Nasaqalau in Lakeba, Lau. At 33 years old, he remains committed to self-improvement and making the most of opportunities that arise.

He described depression as a formidable challenge he faced while pursuing his degree but credits the encouragement from peers who believed in him for helping him persevere. He concluded by expressing gratitude for the support of his family and friends and for the central role of faith in his journey toward success.
