Ana Seru, a Year Nine student from Naivucini, Naitasiri, was named the top female cadet during the John Wesley College passing-out parade held at Albert Park, Suva. Growing up in the densely populated Raiwaqa area, which is often challenged by social issues, provided her with a unique perspective on resilience.
During her week of cadet training, Ana faced the humid weather while mastering the intricacies of marching, a task she found demanding. The 14-year-old acknowledged that her upbringing was not perfect, but she remained committed to achieving excellence in her education.
Ana emphasized the importance of education as a pathway to improve her circumstances. She remarked, “I had no other choice, but the only way to improve my life is through education.”
She also highlighted the significance of making sound decisions, particularly in the face of peer pressure, a lesson instilled in her by her family. Ana dedicated her award to her siblings and father, who were present at the ceremony.
As the more reserved member of her family, she expressed hope that her recognition would motivate her younger siblings to realize that they too can accomplish great things through perseverance. Ana’s siblings, currently in primary school, have expressed interest in joining secondary school and participating in cadet training after witnessing her success.
