Ana Seru, a Year Nine student from the Raiwaqa area, has been recognized as the top female cadet during the passing-out parade at John Wesley College, held at Albert Park in Suva. Despite growing up in a challenging environment marked by social issues, Ana demonstrated perseverance throughout a week of intense cadet training, adapting to the humid conditions and mastering marching techniques.
At just 14 years old, Ana reflected on her upbringing, acknowledging its difficulties but emphasizing her commitment to educational excellence. “I knew my upbringing was not ideal, but I strived for excellence every time I stepped into the classroom,” she stated. With a strong belief in the power of education to transform her life, she expressed that improving her situation was her only choice.
Originating from Naivucini, Naitasiri, Ana shared the importance of making wise decisions, particularly in the face of peer pressure, a principle that was instilled in her from a young age. She believes that making good choices is integral to achieving positive results.
During the event, Ana dedicated her award to her siblings and her father, who were present to support her. “I’m the introvert in the family, and I hope this award will inspire my younger siblings to believe that they can achieve anything if they set their minds to it,” she said. Her performance has already motivated her younger siblings, who are in primary school, to aspire to join secondary school and engage in cadet training.
