Transitioning from a background in science to a focus on accounting and economics was a significant challenge for 21-year-old Sanskar Kapadia. However, his hard work and perseverance bore fruit when he, alongside Kamal Prasad and Fatima Siddeqa, was honored with the Most Outstanding Accounting and Finance Student Award 2024 at the University of Fiji School of Business and Economics ceremony last week in Lautoka.
Mr. Kapadia expressed that adjusting to a new field was daunting, particularly when faced with unfamiliar concepts. Nevertheless, the encouragement from his lecturers and his consistent effort helped him gain confidence in his studies. He faced the additional challenge of balancing his academic responsibilities with career preparation. “Managing deadlines, assignments, and preparing for the future wasn’t straightforward,” he admitted. By staying organized and prioritizing tasks, he successfully juggled part-time work alongside his studies.
Kamal Prasad shared her own experience of overcoming obstacles in her academic journey, finding motivation in her mother’s words about the importance of striving for success. She encountered financial challenges, especially regarding transportation, but noted that her father’s unwavering support made a difference. With help from her friend Ruqayyah Hakim, she faced academic challenges and persevered through her educational path.
Fatima Aiyesha Siddeqa, the 2021 dux of Nadi Muslim College, cited the sacrifices made by her mother and grandmother as significant motivators. She expressed a strong desire to honor their efforts, saying, “I never wanted their efforts to go to waste.” For her, success is measured not just by personal achievements but by leaving a legacy of inspiration. As the eldest daughter, she aims to make her family proud, drawing strength from her aunt, who she describes as a constant source of inspiration and support.
This narrative of resilience and determination highlights the triumphs emerging from challenges faced by students. It serves as a reminder that with support, organization, and a commitment to growth, one can overcome obstacles in pursuit of their dreams. Their success stories reflect not only personal ambitions but also the influence of familial support, illustrating the importance of community and perseverance in achieving educational goals.
