From Struggles to Success: A Lawyer’s 15-Year Journey

After nearly 15 years, Lanieta Gonewai Bilitaki has successfully been admitted to the bar. On Friday, the 34-year-old was one of 45 new law graduates from the University of the South Pacific to receive their admission from acting Chief Justice Salesi Temo.

Ms. Bilitaki reflected on her challenging journey, stating that persistence was crucial. She faced setbacks that included dropping out of university due to peer pressure, which required her to seek work to pursue her education again. Additionally, the loss of her father in 2021 was a significant emotional hurdle.

Despite these challenges, Ms. Bilitaki maintained her commitment to her educational goals. “The dream of completing my education never left me,” she expressed. Throughout her difficulties, she focused on her aspiration to graduate and become a practicing lawyer.

She expressed gratitude to her family for their unwavering support, particularly honoring her late father for his guidance. Ms. Bilitaki acknowledged the encouragement from her paternal family, who continued to inspire her after her father’s passing, as well as her maternal family who stood by her through thick and thin.

She also recognized her mother, Veranaisi Gonewai, describing her as a “beacon of hope” who has consistently provided support through prayer and encouragement. Furthermore, she thanked her siblings and close friends for their roles in her success, as well as her husband Paulo, who is currently serving in Yemen.

Ms. Bilitaki urged young people not to let their family backgrounds define their aspirations. “You fall once, you rise again. You never ever give up. It may take three years, it may take 10, but if your heart is willing, you will achieve your dreams,” she advised.

Currently, Ms. Bilitaki is employed by the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection.
