Priyashna Shivangni Sagar’s inspiring journey showcases the profound impact of determination and family support in overcoming adversity. This week, she was celebrated as the top Bachelor of Commerce and Accounting graduate at the Fiji National University College of Humanities and Education graduation ceremony.

Reflecting on her success, Ms. Sagar emphasized the importance of education, a value instilled by her parents. “My parents have always taught me that education is the key to success,” she said, acknowledging that her academic achievements stem from their sacrifices. As the youngest of three siblings, she embraced her role while demonstrating resilience and hard work.

Ms. Sagar’s older brother played a significant motivational role in her life, often reminding her of their family’s struggles. “I owe a lot to my brother, because he always made sure he was on time picking me up from school, reminding me of our parents’ struggles, and encouraging me to do better,” she recalled.

Her parents, Sunita Devi and Ram Sagar, worked tirelessly to provide educational opportunities for their children despite considerable financial hurdles. They faced numerous challenges, including difficulty paying school fees, which made Ms. Sagar all the more determined to excel. She acknowledged that support programs such as bus fare assistance, free education, and the National Toppers Scheme were instrumental in her success. Without these resources, she would have been forced to take out a loan to continue her education.

With her father working as a casual laborer and her mother taking on various odd jobs, Ms. Sagar’s family dynamic reinforced her commitment to achieve academic excellence. Now employed since January, she and her brother are optimistic about improving their family’s financial situation. “My brother has a job, I’m working, and we’re slowly getting there,” she expressed hopefully.

Looking back on her experiences, Ms. Sagar aspires to inspire others who may be facing similar challenges. “I want kids to know that it’s not always going to be hard—there are better days ahead,” she concluded.

This heartfelt story serves as a powerful reminder that with perseverance and a supportive community, one can overcome even the toughest of circumstances. Ms. Sagar’s story encourages those in similar situations to persist, indicating that through effort and hope, brighter days are possible.
