Elena Tinai’s journey exemplifies determination, community backing, and the impactful role of small business growth. A member of the South Pacific Business Development (SPBD) within the Lautoka branch, Saru Centre, Ms. Tinai was honored with the 2023 Businesswoman of the Year Award at SPBD’s annual awards event.
Her inspiring path from adversity to achievement serves as a motivation for aspiring entrepreneurs, especially women in rural areas of Fiji. The 44-year-old, originally from Sawakasa in Tailevu and now residing in Saru, Lautoka with her supportive husband, has opened their home to children in need, despite not having any of their own.
In 2013, Ms. Tinai embarked on her entrepreneurial journey by joining SPBD, known for empowering small businesses in underserved communities. Her initial loan of $700 was pivotal, allowing her to start a fish-selling venture at Lautoka Wharf. The business gradually prospered, albeit facing various challenges.
Her experience mirrored that of many small business owners, as she recounted the difficulties in managing her time between night fishing and selling her catch. Ms. Tinai emphasized that perseverance is crucial to success. “I always tell myself that success isn’t about being lazy or giving up. You have to keep going, no matter how hard it gets,” she remarked.
Her business expanded to include kava sourced from Rakiraki, catering to both loyal clients and new customers. Over time, her loan amounts grew from $700 to $5,000, and then to $7,000 this year, thanks to SPBD’s adaptable financial assistance and community focus.
“SPBD teaches us that we’re not alone. When times get tough, we can always turn to our center for support. Many women hesitate to join SPBD due to loan stereotypes or fears about repayment. But I tell them, ‘this organization is not like a bank. They genuinely care about you and will help you succeed,’” she stated.
Looking to the future, Ms. Tinai has ambitious plans for her business. Her goal is to purchase her own fishing boat, enabling her to increase production and enhance sustainability. She aims to encourage other women in her community to utilize SPBD’s offerings, reinforcing the importance of integrity and self-belief in achieving success. “SPBD believes in you, and if they can provide you with opportunities that banks cannot, you must believe in yourself and reinvest that support to grow.”
